In fact, Both Christianity and Islam concur on honoring and praising Prophet Lot and commemorating his as well as his family’s deliverance from the torture which was inflicted on his people who used to commit immorality.

However, in the Bible, Christianity claims that Prophet Lot’s daughters gave him wine to drink and committed incest with him in flagrant contradiction to the honoring and praise reported in the Bible. So, let’s have a look at what Christianity and Islam say about Prophet Lot in the Bible and the Qur’an.

The Bible praises and describes Prophet Lot as “a righteous man.” We read: “And delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their lawless deeds)” (2 Peter 2:7-8)

The Bible relates to us how God delivered Lot and his family as He was merciful to him. We read: And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, “Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters who are here, lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.” And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife and upon the hand of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful unto him; and they brought him forth and set him outside the city. (Genesis 19:15-16)

However, Christianity ascribes to Prophet Lot and his family such sins and immoralities which contradict the stated honoring and praise. It ascribes to Prophet Lot wine drinking and incest commission.

We read: “And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. And the first-born said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. And the first-born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.” (Genesis 19:30-38)

The Qur’an honors and praises Lot as it tells us that he was one of the prophets who were preferred to worlds. We read:

And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot – and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds. (Al-An`am 6:86)

The Qur’an also relates to us how God delivered Prophet Lot from the torture which afflicted his people. We read:

The angels said, “O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back – except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?” (Hud 11:81)

The image Islam paints for Prophet Lot in the Qur’an is more becoming and suitable than the one Christianity does in the Bible. The Qur’an tells us that Prophet Lot was one of the prophets who were preferred to worlds and therefore he deserved to be delivered from torture by God. There is nothing which contradicts that in the Qur’an.

In Christianity, despite the praise of Prophet Lot and his description as “a righteous man”, major sins and immoralities, like drinking wine and committing incest, are ascribed to him.

It is ironic that Christianity prohibits drinking wine in the Bible. In the Old Testament, we read: And the Lord spoke unto Aaron, saying, “Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.” (Leviticus 10:8-11)

In the New Testament, we read: “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

Just as the Bible prohibits drinking wine, it also prohibits incest. It even administers a harsh punishment for it. For example, we read: “If a man sleeps with his father’s wife, he has violated the intimacy that belongs to his father. Both of them must be put to death; their death is their own fault. If a man sleeps with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death. They have acted perversely; their death is their own fault.” (Leviticus 20:11-12)

If the Bible prohibits ordinary people from drinking wine and committing incest, how come wine is drunk and incest is committed by one of the prophets who were preferred to worlds?
