The relation between the physical and the spiritual is very true. Most of us feel serene and relaxed when we spend some time between the beautiful blooms, at an open sea or in a vast desert.
The same is true when reciting the Quran, remembering God or contemplating on His creation and also when one is offering fasting. These practices play a significant role in purifying the soul and thus reviving the urges for doing the good.
Therefore, the good deeds, such as charity, prayer, reciting the Quran, etc. grow up during the days of fating. This is so apparent.
In Ramadan, people become all set for good works owing to the high purity of their souls, the rise of faith, and powerlessness of the evil desires.
In addition, the Prophet (peace be upon him) indicated that Satan, the source of all evils, is chained in Ramadan.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “When Ramadan begins, the gates of (Paradise) Jannah are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
All of this serves to rectify the behavior and help one become close to God.
Concerning this close relationship between the soul and the body and their relation with fasting, which is an obligation during the entire month of Ramadan, Dr. Bilal Philips talks about both the spiritual and physical impacts of fasting. He states that fasting seeks to implant the meaning of positivism, righteousness and virtuousness.
