The Ruling of Reciting Al-Fatihah behind the Imam in a Loud Prayer

Question:

What is the ruling of reciting Surat Al-Fatihah (the Opening Chapter) behind the Imam in a loud prayer? The recitation of the Imam is so fast and we do not have time to recite Al-Fatihah.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, we praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.

It was narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The prayer of the one who does not recite Al-Fatihah is invalid” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim}.

Al-Imam An-Nawawi said, “Reciting Al-Fatihah is an obligatory act of prayer, one of its pillars, must be recited itself, must be recited in Arabic, can`t be replaced by another verse, must be recited in all types of prayer: supererogatory, obligatory, silent, or non-silent, must be recited by the man, the woman, the traveler, the boy, the standing, the sitting, and the one praying while lying on his side, and this applies to the Imam, those praying behind him and the one praying solely.” (Al-Majmou`)
