Imam Supplicates For Himself in Prayer: Allowed?

Supplication During Prayer

Question:

Is it permissible for an Imam (leader of prayer) to make an exclusive supplication (du`aa’) for himself in the prayer?

Answer:

First of All, it is recommended to make du`aa’ during prayer as authenticated in the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A slave becomes nearest to his Lord when he is in prostration. So increase supplications while prostrating.” (Muslim)

In another hadith, when the prophet taught the Companions the tashahud at the end of the prayer, then he said, “Then let him choose whatever supplications he wishes.” (Agreed Upon)

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that it is highly recommended to generalize while making the supplication in the congregational prayer. There are two kinds of supplication, that are loud and private supplications.
