The Period of Wiping Over Socks

Question:

How long does wiping over socks last after taking a shower and putting them on a state of purification?

Answer:

The majority of scholars are of the view that it is permissible to wipe over fabric or leather khuffain instead of taking them off as long as you wear them on a state of purification.

It was narrated that Al-Mughirah ibn Shu`bah said: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution (wudu) and wiped over his socks and sandals.” (At-Tirmidhi)

Conditions of wiping over Socks

1- They must be put on after performing ablution while one is still in a state of purification.

2- They must be clean and pure.

3- It is permissible to wipe over them when one is purifying himself from minor impurity not when one is in a state of major impurity.

4- The wiping is made within the time specified by the Islamic Shari`ah.
