How Does the Qur’an Deal with the Abuse of Women?

By Editorial Staff

What is the genuine stance of Islam about the abuse of women? Does Islam legalize or illegalize it? There is a Qur’anic verse in Surah An-Nisaa’ that reads,

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand. (An-Nisaa’ 4:34)

The verse contains a clear command of striking a wife in case she makes trouble with her husband and refuses to yield to the advice. Does this mean that Islam sides with the abuse of women? Does Islam find nothing wrong with encroaching upon people’s dignity and honor?

In fact, these questions are rationally accepted, especially when one considers the hostile attitude of some Muslims towards their women. There are many Muslims who misinterpret and thus misuse the divine texts and commit many wrong actions under the name of religion.

In the following video, the eminent Sheikh Nouman Ali Khan touches on the issue of the abuse of women and how the revealed texts dealt with it. Sheikh Nouman states that there are other texts that conveyed the prohibition of beating women such as the hadith that says, “Do not heat the female slaves of Allah.” (Abu Dawud) So, there is evident contradiction between these texts. Sheikh Nouman sheds light on the Islamic stance regarding the abuse of woman in Islam and discusses the manifestation of Islam’s kind treatment of women and the meritorious rights given to them under the tent of Islam. Enjoying watching this interesting lecture by Sheikh Nouman Khan to learn more about the stance of Islam regarding the abuse of women.
