Abstained from Food and Drink because Her Son Converted to Islam

His mother abstained from food and drink because her son converted to Islam.“By God, either you forsake this religion or I would not eat or drink until I die”, she said.

Life, in the shade of the Islamic Creed, has taught me

to love everyone who follows the truth

But if he neglects it, then the truth becomes dearer to me than him, than even myself, my family, my wealth, my children and all the people

This is Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) answering the call of truth and guidance

and becomes the third of the first three persons who entered Islam

But his conversion to Islam wasn’t that easy

He went through one of the hardest situations, concerning it verses of the Qur’an were revealed

When his mother heard the news of his Islam, she flew into a rage

“And I was very attached and dutiful to her”, he said

“She came up to me,” he says, “and said: ‘O Sa`d! What is this religion that you have embraced which has taken you away from the religion of your mother and father?’

“By God, either you forsake this religion or I would not eat or drink until I die. Your heart would be broken with grief for me and remorse would consume you on account of what you have done, and people would censure you forever more.’”

“I said,” he said, “O my mother, don’t do such a thing, for I would not give up my religion for anything.”

However, she went on with her threat. She neither ate nor drank for days

Hour after hour, he would come to her asking her to eat some food or drink something but she persistently refused

He then said to her, “O mother! In spite of my strong love for you, my love for Allah and His Messenger is indeed stronger.”

“By Allah, if you had a thousand souls and each one departs one after another, I would not abandon this religion for anything. So, eat or abandon! It is your wish whether you want to eat or not!”

When she saw how he was determined she relented unwillingly and ate and drank

Then, concerning them Allah (Exalted be He) revealed:

“But if they strive with you to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in this world kindly”(Luqman 31:15)
