The Ruling of the Vaginal Discharge
Question:
What are the types of the vaginal discharge? Do they necessitate performing ghusl (ritual bath)?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, we praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
There are two types of the vaginal discharge:
1- Sexual Discharge
If a woman has intercourse, or orgasm or a wet dream the emits sexual discharge, then she must perform ghusl.
It was narrated that Um Sulaim said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Verily Allah is not shy of (telling you) the truth. Is it essential for a woman to take a bath after she had a wet dream (nocturnal sexual discharge)?” He said, “Yes, if she notices discharge.” On that Um Salamah laughed and said, “Does a woman get a (nocturnal sexual) discharge?” He said, “How then does (her) son resemble her (his mother)?” (Al-Bukhari)
However, if a woman has discharge during sexual thoughts, foreplay, kissing etc., without an orgasm, then she should renew her wudu’ (ablution).
2- Regular Vaginal Discharge
This kind of discharge is a controversial issue among scholars. Some of them said that this kind of discharge is considered so normal and regular that it does not break the wudu’ (ablution).
